what’s up guys siggy here and welcome to another techie err talk today I’m gonna show you the best budget DSLR streaming set up a lot of people are streaming right now both for gaming and for work and I want to show you how to get an awesome setup using a budget DSLR and get your live streaming to go from this to this I’m going to cover my entire setup starting with a camera capture card microphone and lighting and I’ll also include a couple of software options and peripherals for this setup alright so let’s start out with two basic things you need plus two bonus items which will make your life so much easier and then I’ll show you how to take your budget streaming setup to the next level alright so obviously the first thing you need is the camera a lot of people start out using the built-in camera on their laptop or maybe a webcam but those options prioritize convenience over quality so a built in camera is always there with you and a webcam is super small and usually just clips onto
the monitor so there’s very little setup but what you gain in convenience you pay for in terms of quality if you’re on the road and that’s all you have I totally get it but if you’re creating a dedicated streaming setup you’re gonna get a lot of use out of those tools are simply not designed to give you a professional look so I’m going to show you how you can use my favorite budget DSLR to really up your game and the advantage of using a DSLR is that we have full control over our exposure our framing and we can also create that shallow depth of field or blurry background effect now this helps us separate ourselves from the background and gives the stream a more professional look and feel so the camera that I’ve been talking about is the canon SL 3 or 250 D or 200 D mark – these are all names for the same camera depending on where in the world you are this is a fantastic entry level DSLR from Canon I’ve got tons of videos about it on my channel and it’s a great option if you’re getting into video in general as well as live streaming and let me tell you why I think it’s such a great option so that you can make an educated decision the first and
probably most important thing is that the SL 3 is easy to use it’s designed for entry-level users so there isn’t an expectation that you have all this previous video knowledge the controls are super simple and you’re not going to be overwhelmed with buttons dials or menus and at the same time the quality of the video is fantastic for the price the next feature I like about this camera is that it has a fully articulating touchscreen so whatever camera you use is going to be facing you and with this one you can swing the screen out to the side and then flip it to face to front so that you can both see how you’re framed and make changes to your settings using the full touch screen and this combination is gonna save you from having to get up walk behind the camera make a change come back sit down see how it works and having to do this over and over again until you get exactly what you want and trust me you’re gonna love that part the next reason why I love the SL 3 is that it uses canons dual pixel autofocus with face and eye detection when shooting in 1080p which is what I think most people are going to stream in the autofocus system is super reliable and accurate and all you need to do is click on the Q icon
on the screen go to the top left icon for autofocus method and select the first option for face detection and tracking then make sure you hit the info button to activate eye detection for even more precise focus that’s it once that set up as soon as you sit down you’ll see that the camera automatically detects your face and that we have this little white square around it and then if your eyes detect it it will have an even smaller white square around your eye this is another reason why I love having a fully articulating screen which faces me this way I can always check to make sure that I’m being tracked and that I didn’t inadvertently change that setting you don’t want to start a stream and then ten minutes into it realized that you’ve been out of focus this whole time now the next important feature of the SL 3 is that it has a cleaning HDMI out if you’ve noticed in the footage that I showed you for the autofocus you can see the face detection square and all the settings that I have selected on the camera but you don’t actually want those things on the video that you’re going to stream and that’s where a clean HDMI out helps it’s called that because it’s clean of any of the overlays that you see on the screen so I
can look at the camera see my settings and the focus indicator but the signal that’s coming out of the camera doesn’t have that info and it’s just a clean image to turn this on go to menu shoot for HDMI info display and select clean F HD or full HD output now there are a lot of cameras on the market and new ones keep coming out some have a clean HDMI out but a lot of them don’t so that’s a feature you’re gonna want to make sure that you have if you want to stream with your camera I’m constantly updating my complete guide to live streaming gear and you can find it at tech gear TOCOM slash livestream gear so go and take a look and see if your camera is listed as having a clean HDMI out if your camera does not have a clean HDMI out like what we get with the Canon M 50 or the SL 2 there is another solution and a link to a tutorial showing you how to get that done up in the corner and in the description the next important feature for a live streaming is that we can turn off the auto shutoff feature for the SL 3 like many devices these days cameras have an auto shutoff
feature to help preserve battery life this is great when you’re taking pictures or you’re shooting video and you forget to turn the camera off because you can just select a certain length of time and have the camera automatically turn off but when we stream we’re not actually recording to the camera in fact you don’t even need an SD card we’re simply passing the signal from the camera to the capture card which I’ll get to in a minute and because of that the camera might not know that it’s being used so with the SL 3 as soon as you turn on clean HDMI out it will automatically disable the auto shutoff feature the next issue could be the battery life and with the SL 3 I use the first bonus item I mentioned and that’s a coupler that I can plug into the battery compartment and then plug into the wall outlet and now I have continuous uninterrupted power for as long as I need and I never have to think about the battery I’ll put links in the description to all the products that I talked about in the video so you don’t need to write anything down and you can easily find them
now the SL 3 currently sells for 549 dollars for just the body or you can get it with the 18 to 55 millimeter kit lens for an extra bucks now while this is not a lens video I do want to cover some basics because after all that’s one of the main advantages of using a dedicated camera the 18 to 55 is the focal length range of the lens meaning that it can go from as wide as 18 all the way to as tight as 55 millimeters now this makes it super easy to get the exact framing that you want without having to move the camera back and forth to get it at the perfect distance now the downside of this lens is it doesn’t have a very wide aperture which is what gives you that separation from the background and it’s not the best in low-light but will take care of that in a minute now one of the reasons why I picked a canon camera is that there are a ton of lens options from Canon and from third-party vendors so when I stream I’m going to use my absolute favorite lens to Sigma 18 to 35 F 1.8 the next thing you’re
gonna need is to get the image from your camera to your computer and that’s where a capture card comes in a capture card is basically a device that takes the signal from your DSLR or mirrorless camera and converts it to a signal that your streaming software can accept there are tons of options on the market and I’ll highlight a few of the ones that I use the one I’m using right now is DL got o HD 60 S Plus which retails for around 170 bucks now it’s a super simple plug-and-play card which will work great for gamers and for traditional streaming it can handle 1080p HD R capture and has a 4k 60hz are 10 pass through for your gameplay so I use a mini HDMI to HDMI cable plug it into the HD 60 S Plus and then connect the USB C cable to a USB C port on my computer and then I’m all set now I’m using this card because I need it for multiple purposes but if you’re looking for a more basic set up at a lower price point I highly recommend that you check out the cam link 4k you basically just plug it into an open USB port on your computer use the same mini HDMI to HDMI cable and you’re up and running now before I move on to the second bonus item if you like what you’ve seen so far let me know by giving this video a thumbs up it helps me know what kind of content you like so that I can make more of it and if it’s your first time here go ahead
and hit the subscribe and notification buttons so you can stay up to date on all the latest gear and tutorials alright so you have your camera and your lens but where are you gonna put it and how are you gonna mount it this is where I love the elgato multi mount and flex arm kit this combination is incredibly versatile and it allows me to attach the multi mount right to my desk behind the monitor and then I can get my camera in the exact height that I want it’s so much easier to set up and move around in a tripod and if I need additional versatility I add the flexible arm kit which has four tubes at various lengths connecting at ball joints now I can use just one or any combination of the forearms to get the camera in the exact position that I need there’s also a weighted base option if you don’t want to mount it to your desk and this thing has been super awesome to use for so many other reasons but that’s for another video okay so most people stop here but I want to show you how a few accessories are gonna make a significant difference in the quality of your
stream first I want to talk about an aspect of streaming that is really important but yet most people are gonna completely ignore I’m talking about audio there’s so much focus on image quality when it comes to video and live streaming and no one is really thinking about audio and I think that’s a huge mistake I’m much more likely to turn off a live stream or a video because of poor audio than poor video the built-in microphone on your laptop is passable when you’re in a pinch but if I’m watching a stream for an hour or two hours I don’t want to hear all the background noise and I don’t want to hear all that self noise or that hiss that you hear when someone’s using a bad microphone so I’m gonna give you a couple of options here at different price points all except for one are going to be USB mics which make your life super easy you just plug them into your desktop or laptop it will recognize them as an audio source and you’re all set so it’s gonna separate these microphones in terms of prices are features and one of them could be something like
where the microphone can pick up sound from so if it’s picking up sound just from the front it’s great for recording one person the front in the back so that I can Kord two people or maybe even an omnidirectional mic that picks up sound from everywhere and I can put it in the middle of the desk and record a group of people other features to look at our things like an anti-vibration shockmount the ability to adjust volume or mute the mic using controls on the microphone having access to a headphone jack for monitoring audio and a few other things now I’ll do a more in-depth dedicated microphone video but here are some good options the first option is the blue snowball ice it’s a USB cardioid condenser mic which sells for 50 bucks and even at this price point it’s gonna make a drastic difference for your audio it’s Skype and Dischord certified works with both Mac and PC comes with a desktop tripod and is available in black and white next we have a new release from rode the NT USB mini we’re still looking at a hundred bucks we have a built-in pop filter zero latency headphone monitoring port with a dedicated output volume control and I really love the detachable magnetic base this makes it super simple to remove from the provided desk stand and mount onto a mic stand or a
studio arm and the mic can also rotate 360 degrees on the mount so you can always position it at the proper angle alright the last hundred dollar mic is another USB mic the blue Yeti Nano now unlike the snowball ice this mic lets you select between a cardioid and omnidirectional pickup patterns so you can use it to record yourself or a single host podcast gaming Skype call voiceovers doing vocals or playing an instrument or you can switch the omnidirectional where the microphone records sound from every direction and is perfect for a multi person interview or for a conference call with several participants alright now we’re going a little over a hundred bucks here and the first mic is the Samsung G track Pro which retails for around a hundred and twenty bucks this mic is great for streaming gaming podcasting and recording music it has a unique feature that allows you to record your voice and a musical instrument at the same time using a quarter-inch input there’s a front panel mixer that lets you control microphone levels instrument levels and headphone volumes independently you can select between cardioid figure-eight and omnidirectional pickup patterns and either mono or two track
recording modes and then finally there is a mute button to quickly shut off the mic and a zero latency headphone port moving on to our next mic we have the HyperX quad cast which retails for around a hundred and forty bucks as a very cool look with a built in red internal pop filter and included anti vibration shock mount with red bands it has a super neat tap to mute sensor on the top with an LED indicator which is super convenient to use for selectable polar patterns so you can pick between cardioid omnidirectional bi-directional or stereo there’s a convenient microphone gain control dial on the bottom and a headphone jack it’ll definitely improve your audio quality and at the same time add a splash of color to your stream moving on check out the next mic from blue the Yeti X it sells for one hundred and seventy bucks which means we’re gonna get more features we have a four capsule condenser array which results in a more focused and crisp audio for each of the four pickup patterns it also comes with blue voice software which lets you dial up professional vocal effects and custom presets at the push of a button and we’re not done yet here we have a multi-function smart knob which
provides precise control over mic gain mute and headphone volume and finally we have a custom led which lets you personalize the lights to match the color of your setup the last microphone I want to discuss is different from the rest in that it’s not a USB microphone if you’re ready to move to the next level then the blackout spark SL from blue is a great option it sells for right under 200 bucks and it’s an XLR mic so it requires you to use an audio interface I use mine with my Focusrite 18 I eight which provides it with phantom power and I love how full the sound is on the front you’ll see two toggles so one on the left is a low-cut filter which helps increase clarity and reduce background noise and the one on the right is a minus 20 DB pad which will lower the sensitivity of the mic in case you get super excited to the point where things are getting out of control and finally the mic comes with a custom shock mount and a really nice wooden storage box alright so let’s move on to the next topic that will separate your stream from the rest lighting lighting is more important to your overall image quality than a better camera better cameras will do slightly better in lower light but they’re still limited by what they can do
with the available light for today’s studio I’m using a legato zki light air now algata offers us light in two versions the larger key light and the smaller key light air and I chose to go with two of the smaller ones because they’re plenty strong for what I need I absolutely love the simplicity of the setup and how versatile it is each light comes with a desk stand so you’re not messing around with big light stands on the floor or anything like that these stands are plenty heavy to keep the light from moving and the lights themselves are super easy to adjust in terms of height and angle but these lights are not just easy to set up they also provide wonderful quality diffused or soft light my background is in photography and video so lighting has always been super important to me and what’s impressive about these is that you get very even flattering light from such a compact source also because these are edge lit by 80 LED bulbs it’s a gentle light to have pointed at your face for long periods of time of course if you get the larger model the key light you’ll have even more power at your fingertips now both lights can be controlled through your PC Mac Android or iPhone using the control center app what’s great is that you can control both the intensity and color temperature of the light so you can make it warm or cool depending on what you like
better and they also work with stream deck which I’ll tell you about at the end of the video and you’re gonna want to hear that part having all these control options means that you’re not messing around with knobs or dials on the lights you don’t have to get up every time to make changes you just sit down get the look that you want and you’re ready to stream moving on to the monitor for this setup I chose the Ben QEW 2780 entertainment monitor it’s a 27 inch full HD 16 by 9 aspect ratio IPS display it has hgri and is very affordable at 179 dollars an HD RI is Ben Q system which uses a built-in sensor that detects ambient light levels in the room and then evaluates and adjusts the on-screen image has a very small bezel on the top and side’s comes with freesync and it has 22.1 channel speakers with three audio modes for cinema popper live music
and n dialogue or vocals the last thing I want to mention about this monitor is that it has multiple eyecare options like low blue light zero flicker and I reminder that detects your presence and suggests periodic breaks a color weakness mode which helps individuals with color perception deficiency more easily distinguished between colors and even an ePaper mode which simulates an e-book reading experience so you can see that you’re getting a ton of features and at a good price and I think this is an outstanding entry level or a budget option if you’re streaming gaming and watching movies moving on the keyboard I’m using is the corsair k70 mark to rapid-fire special edition mechanical keyboard if you haven’t tried a mechanical keyboard before you should it’s such a better experience so whether I’m working streaming or gaming it’s great to have options in terms of the feel of the switches and
their sound with this board I love the anodized brushed aluminum frame the PBG double shot key caps and the Cherry MX speed RGB switches which have super fast actuation at one point two millimeter and only require 45 grams of actuation force the K 70 Mark 2 also has three onboard profiles so you can set up lighting effects and macros for streaming using the IQ software and then unplug the keyboard and take it with you on the road or connect it to another machine and your profiles will be stored it has dedicated media keys a mute key an awesome volume rocker and I just found it for a hundred and ten bucks which is a great value next I want to move on to my choice of mouse and here I paired the K 70 mark 2 with the corsair dark or RGB se this wireless gaming mouse sells for 70 bucks and it uses an ultra-fast one-millisecond 2.4 gigahertz connection for the best performance in terms of wireless connectivity the mouse has a 16,000 optical dpi sensor and has 9 programmable buttons I love the texture of this Mouse and the longer shape is super comfortable from my grip it has pretty understated use of RGB with the logo accents around the wheel the sniper button and two additional strips and a cool feature about the sei or special
edition version of this mouse is that you can wirelessly charge it so if you have a Qi enabled mouse pad you can just place the mouse over it when you’re done using it and you’ll never need to worry about charging I’m moving on as far as streaming software I use OBS it just happened to be what I started using it’s easy to work with and integrates with my stream deck which I still have to tell you about at the end of this video and it’s been very stable for me another free option is xsplit and if you’re using an alligator capture card then you can use al gatos Game Capture or the 4k capture utility I’ll do a dedicated video about these three options but I just wanted to mention a few in case you’re just starting your research alright so you’ve heard me mention the stream deck a few times so let’s get to it the stream deck is basically how I control my entire stream it has 15 LCD buttons that I can program to do anything from switch scenes launch media adjust audio send out notification tweets and a lot more I actually use it every day even when I’m not streaming by creating shortcuts for different tasks and because you can create folders it’s really
simple to organize and I’m not limited to just 15 total actions or shortcuts and there are two other options available there’s a mini option with 6 keys and then an Excel option with 32 keys and I would definitely recommend that you check all three out and see how they can help your streaming and general workflow alright so I think the SL 3 is a fantastic budget DSLR for streaming it’s easy to use it has a fully articulating touchscreen a clean HDMI out and can be continuously used for longer streams but now I want to know what you think is it a good option and is it one that you would consider getting I have links in the description to the SL 3 as well as all the other products that I mentioned in this video and if you end up using those links to buy anything you can help support my channel for free so thank you in advance I really hope this video was helpful if it was please let me know by leaving a comment giving this video a thumbs up tweeted shared and if you haven’t yet join the community by hitting the subscribe and notification buttons for more tips and tutorials I also recommend you follow me on instagram twitter and facebook at your talk you know what I always say buy it nice or buy twice good luck and see you soon
